Why not run a test on the cable itself? Do you have testing tools?

this is what makes me think its the network cabling to his office. however, im looking for something to monitor the connection to his computer, like a continuous ping, to see if it drops from time to time.

Does the user have updated drivers? Or any software that is unique? Something has to be different.

our setup is very simple. all computers connect the same with no rules on our switches/firewall/routers for specific users. this user connects to the same database (on a locally hosted server) that a dozen other users connect to and he is the only one who gets the error... which suggests to me either there is some interference on the network port in his office, or on his laptop/docking station. i merely want something that will constantly monitor his connection to the server that has the database to see if he is losing connection or has some sort of interference between his computer and our network.

Is it your network router software that will do that for you at certain local address such as
192.168.0.10 ?

Could you write it in detail ? What network are you on, What network or computer hardware  are you using  ? Let us a picture to your scenario
