The Update Manager had problems installing some packages. I recall that there were some installation problems with samba two months ago, but I had no time to deal with it then. I have attached the log of the update listed in the Update Manager box.
How do I fix the update and possible installation problems.
Thanks in advance.
After the failure, I did:
sudo apt-get update
and then:

I came back to this computer and it appears to be updating without errors. I guess whatever I did per your advice worked. Thanks much.

>> Is there any specific need why you cannot work with samba v3 included and need unsupported ppa samba4 packages?
No. I am just trying to get my wife's PC working OK without getting the errors. I wasn't aware of a mix of samba3 and samba4 that you pointed out. Now I am just trying to follow your instructions to the letter. I am not very familiar with installation and Linux administration problems.
Using your list I did a purge. Is there anything more I need to do, or are we done? The Update Manager has not been showing any updates to install.

in unsupported list:

Is there any specific need why you cannot work with samba v3 included and need unsupported ppa samba4 packages?

Is this what I am supposed to do (picked out "samba" from the unsupported list)?
If so, is there anything further that I should do after that?

Staying on subject - samba4 is unsupported.
Author: phoffric replied at 2024-07-06 04:56:14
I saw that the "settings" icon (top right) was red and the drop-down menu said to reboot to complete the operations. After rebooting, I did another dpkg -l | grep samba, and now there are only 11 entries in the attached (down from 14-15 entries earlier). Are there still a mixture of samba3 and samba4 packages?
The attached file, unsupported.txt, is the output from $ ubuntu-support-status --show-unsupported.
>> CHeck for unsupported packages and remove them.
What command should I use to remove them?
Should I remove all of them? I see references to vlc, which I installed. If I remove those references, will vlc continue to work?
Thanks.

CHeck for unsupported packages and remove them.
$ ubuntu-support-status --show-unsupported
You have mix of samba3 and samba4 packages, while it will likely work you will not know which of 2 versions is at fault.

The current state of the installation is in the attached samba-list3.txt file. This file has one more line than samba-list2.txt, and the same number of lines as samba-list.txt (although some lines are different).
Thanks.
Thanks.

Trying to follow both your instructions.
>> rename /etc/samba/smb.conf - done
>> remove ppa repository - done
>> install supported packages
Since the sudo apt-get purge samba4 appears to not purge anything, I did a sudo apt-get purge samba and that seemed to remove some items, but with errors. Attached is the new dpkg -l | grep samba list: samba-list2.txt and the results of sudo apt-get install -f in purge-samba.txt.
Since I saw "ERROR: Invalid smb.conf" when I did the purge samba, I renamed smb.conf back. But that didn't help with errors. So, I looked online and found How do I completely reset Samba to the shipped defaults? and did:
But the install samba had errors as well (attached file install-samba.txt).
If the installation is huge to get rid of the errors, I can run overnight and report results. If you tell me the command lines to run, I will do it.
Thanks.

After the $ sudo apt-get update worked, I was surprised that the Update Manager finds 22 new itesm (4 related to samba).
Author: phoffric replied at 2024-07-04 12:37:19
Attached are packages related to samba.
I have no other ubuntu pc in the house. This PC was XP a couple of months ago, but when the last XP patch in March made the PC inoperative, I installed Ubuntu 12.04.

I deleted line 57 - got the same line 57 error again, so I deleted the new line 57. Two lines deleted are:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernevil/samba4/ubuntuprecise main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernevil/samba4/ubuntuprecise main
The new lines 57 & 58 are:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernevil/samba4/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernevil/samba4/ubuntu precise main
$ sudo apt-get update
- worked.
I can now bring up Update Manager without getting the error that I introduced after misunderstanding the instructions. (May have been caused by unintentional newlines in the post - not sure what I did wrong.)
In the Update Manager, there were several references to Samba.

rename /etc/samba/smb.conf
it is a huge upgrade samba3 -> samba4, better test on irreleavant machine first.

Could you edit the sources.list file and delete the line 57 by the command of
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
And then try to run $ sudo apt-get update again ?

Try to uninstall and re-install samba4
-First uninstall your samba4 version
sudo apt-get purge samba4
sudo apt-get install -f
-Second, add repository
sudo apt-add-repository "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernevil/samba4/ubuntu precise main"
sudo apt-get update
-Third, add dependencies
sudo apt-get install git build-essential libacl1-dev libattr1-dev libblkid-dev libgnutls-dev libreadline-dev python-dev python-dnspython gdb pkg-config libpopt-dev libldap2-dev dnsutils libbsd-dev attr krb5-user docbook-xsl libcups2-dev libpam0g-dev ntp -y
-Fourth, download samba4
sudo apt-get install samba4
-------------------------
If it is still issue, please send again the command output of "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to us for review, and if the output error is related to libav-tools, you need to removed all packages and reinstalled as follow:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libav-tools -f --fix-missing
Hope understand your question completely. If not please point it out
