Reset bios to defaults.
Are you using a power bar by chance? If so please connect plug to independent source and try again.

what pc is this? post also ram plse.
and also what version XP and W7 (32-bit or 64)
since it works in XP (and if that is 32 bit) you likely don't use the whole ram, while windows 7 uses much more of it.
i would run a ram test to be sure; use memtest86+ for this; i run diags always from the UBCD :
Hardware diagnostic CD UBCD
go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download
since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/
If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass, - you should have NO errors!
For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive) from the HDD section - long or advanced diag ! (runs at least for30 minutes)
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ ultimate boot cd
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html download page

So probably it is related to power chip.
Last fix, reset CMOS switch on mother board to clear and restore CMOS normal mode,
And during F2 setup-->F11-->F10 to save default CMOS setting (do both hardware
and software CMOS reset together(not just one)
if still not fix it, most likely it is hard to fix the power chip.
Be reminded, we are taking about the power chip that is not on the power
supply and that is regulator chip on mother board and it will shut down
when current is drawing too much OR chip is not good
Clean up all dust or dirty around power supply and fans on the top of CPU for
good cooling system

on XP command prompt mode system get freeze after 1 hr
Expert: duncanb7 replied at 2024-03-21 23:01:03
XP installation might use less power than Centos Graphic mode bootup without real installation. So no freeze on XP installation might be NOT a good test to check whether the
issue is related to power chip or not
Did you try to clear and restore CMOS setting by manually on the mother board ?
And after reset CMOS, run the computer again.
You can look at the IBM spec to find out where is CMOS setting switch on your
mother board
be reminded the power chip is also mounted or included on the same common mother board as you said when doing every test

on installation of XP it never freeze. i install XP on that machine 4-5 times by replacing RAM, Power supply, hard drive and even different installation media.
only one thing is common MOTHERBOARD every time, so it it freeze now then i am going to upgrade my system.

besides those testing,
On centos linux version iso image system disk, you can boot your computer at graphic mode without real installation. A few minutes after boot up, it will let you go into Graphic mode once you set boot at DVD. And you can use firefox browser or other tools from Centos DVD disk. and if there is no issue after running several hours, and the freeze
is gone that prove that mightbe not related to Power chip issue, it may be related to
software on your hard disk. If still in freeze, I think that is proved that is from Power chip
issue, it is hard to fix and not deserved to pay for fix that in hardware.
On the other hands, on window Xp installation disk,
during real installation, whether it has freeze or not that is proved whether it is
related to power chip or not

If still not working for those suggestion from those memeber suggested in this thread,
I suggest you the final test, download one Debain or Centos linux iso image and burn
it on CD or DVD, and then install it on your IBM computer with TEXT mode
(NOT graphic mode), and try to run it for whole day
Or you boot your existing computer into window command shell mode (NOT safe/graphic mode).
Since those testing are using less power consumption and less system setting issue,
it should let your computer running for whole day without stopping.
That will prove the power chip is in problem when running in Graphic mode which will
use larger current consumption.
I got the similar issue before, finally I solved it by switch to use Linux TEXT mode
or switch to XP older version. Today buy a new mother board is not too expensive
than going to hardware fix the power chip only .

If it is suddenly shutting off I would suspect your power supply is failing.
You can have it tested at most computer stores for free.
I would replace it.
Is the fan on power supply running?

ok
then the fastest test imo is to install an OS on another disk for testing the issue

Your computer model is same as the following link
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/74p2662.pdf ?
And you bought computer model is around year of 2004, right ?
If the surrounding temperature in your region is changing a lot and some times dry and wet ,and computer was moved a lot of unintentionally, for older computer, it is easier
to have loose internal hardware connection issue that will depend on the temperature change. If possible, could you unmount all peripherial, internal card, device including RAM card and then re-mount all device again in good and solid position, and then restart the computer to see it will improve or not ?

What is your definition of "freeze" ? you mean freeze is whole computer shut down
even power light and computer is turn off OR the computer is still on but just no display

it is very unlikely this occurs in 2 systems....
i would do a clean boot on each, and see if that helps :
run msconfig, select startup tab, click disable all
reboot to test

If they're towers unplug remove side panel and blow the insides out with compressed air, especially the heat sink on CPU also make sure all fans are spinning ok. with side open check components on MB for any bulging or leaking on any caps.

I know of two areas that might be causing this problem:
1. If these systems were running for a long time AND the CPU overheated, then the systems can lockup. This can cause damage to the processor and cause ongoing lockup of other problems. I don't think this is your problem.
2. There is an application running in the background that you don't know about like an anti virus scan, or update running that is taking all the system resources. sometimes this takes all the resources and your system locks because there is nothing left to use.
I suggest restarting the Pc's in safe mode... when you see the motherboard or manufacturer's logo, press F8 multiple times and select Safe Mode with Networking. After getting to the desktop and clicking out of the Safemode notification, let it sit for a few minutes to run anything that is related to the Startup. Then so into Device Mgr and see if there are any devices with an exclamation of problem noted. if so, download new drivers and install them.
You also might want to make sure you don't have multiple anti virus applications running. Many times they work against each other or they take up all the system resources as I mentioned above and lock up the system.
Restart into normal mode and see how it works.
It's always a good idea to delete temporary files, internet cookies and general cleanup. CCleaner is a great free utility to use that does this well.
Hope this helps!

Probably, it is caused by the power chip set on your computer system to shut
down your computer when it draw too much current over the power chip limit.
You can download some free software in google for montioring computer temperature that help to debugg the issue to test which software in most is running and draw most of
current by looking at temperature reading and its increasing
For the fast fix method, resume your computer to stage one week or one month ago by
window system recovery that will help to cancel some software you installed recently
to create your system current increasing. The best recovery or return date is the date
you don't have such issue at that time
If possible, please show us your CPU spec or mother board type
If old CPU or old mother board is running with big window 7 system, that might be
issue, since at the beginning the power chip design might NOT consider to use
such high current consuption from today's window system. So switch back to use
older window system that might help.
For XP
=====
I have seen old CPU/mother board running XP that will be better and never has sudden
freeze or shut down issue, it is seldom to have power shut down issue. If you provide more computer info that will also solve the similar issue on XP
And the indicated power green LED on your computer is still ON when the computer
is freezed with XP or window 7 ?
Hope understand your question completely, if not please pt it out
