Network Routers;Broadband Internet;Wireless Technologies
I find my internet speed, as determined by speedtest.net, repeatedly slows down. I know the problem is actually my wireless router. I reboot the router, my internet speed goes right up. But within a short period of time, the speed drops way down and i have to reboot my router again. I recently got a new cable modem and this did not help the problem (it didn't cause the problem either, i had the problem prior to and after the modem change). I also updated the router to the most recent firmware. This did not help either.
For what it's worth, I have a linksys/cisco Wireless-N Broadband router.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks again, everyone.
Changing channel did not help.
I do have a computer physically hooked up to the modem and it has the same problem as those that connect wirelessly.
There are not a lot of clients using this router. Just my computer, the computer hooked up via lan and my iphone. Occasionally there is also my ipad, maybe 1 other computer.
The next time the problem happens (later today) I will check to see if disconnecting all but one devices helps the problem. But every time I check there are no more than 3 or 4 devices on it.
I am beginning to fear I may just have a broken modem.

I had a WRT600N that had a memory leak and it exhibited the same symptoms. I tried everything and finally only was able to use the router after putting DD-WRT firmware on it (a process that is not for the feint of heart). In the end, I ended up replacing the router altogether. The only thing that would reset the memory leak was rebooting, and I was doing it at least twice a day.

Can you try a wired connection to this router, does it have the same issue? I mean, slow after a while when using a wired connection? To test this properly, you'd better disable the WLAN function temporarily.

If it still not solved, just disconnect all devices to router, just let only one
device or one only computer to re-connect the router again to see if it is improved or not
after restart up process router and only one computer device
If no, I 'll think it in other way to solve later on,
If yes, that is casued by the router overloading issue by connecting too many devices.
SO the information might be useful to get the bug
Be reminded your ISP might NOT welcome you to connect too many PC computer devices to the router( besides not PC computer device)
with using multi- login into its ISP network that my ISP warning me before
If you list out what all devices you connect to router , that will be helpful to solve the issue
Repeat again it is not related to the channel issue since all updated router will
meet the latest IEE802.xxx standard easily(i.e. freqency busy is not a big deal on todays technology with auto channel busy freq adjustment or correction), the channel busy causing issue is only for ten year ago router.Try to imagine your iphone on the channel, whatever wired or wireless , how many users to use the channel in one day, how they solve the channel busy issue without let clients brother or involved

Ok I just figured out how to change the channel on my router. So I'll give that a shot...

I thought this thread is easier but might not easier if you said other device connected
to the router also get the problem
Could you try the DNS setting for Google public DNS server, 8.8.8.8 instead of
your ISP DNS setting or by its auto configuration
Take a quick look at this link but not too focus

Hi - thanks to everybody for the responses. To answer the questions:
It is a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router, Model number WRT160N V3. I am using Windows 8. The problem is not limited to this computer though. Any device that hooks up to this router wirelessly has the same problem. The problem is certainly with the router. I have already updated the router to the most recent firmware. Changing the wifi channel sounds like an interesting idea but I can't figure out how to do it. I can't find a "channel" setting in the modem configuration screen anywhere. The wireless network uses WPA-2 security.
Thanks again

Which Cisco/Linksys WLAN router do you have btw?
Expert: duncanb7 replied at 2024-07-27 13:09:37
probably it is not related to cable or noisy since the wireless connection
distance is not too far and todays hardware technology or semicondutor already overcome
those hardware issue.
I also get the similar issue, but I found some useful link as follows
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-occasionally-drops-the-wireless/e834b67f-12ae-4b3c-aa13-af27553350bd
What system you are using? If on window 7, you may update the wireless router, linksys
from cisco latest driver for window 7 or Linux/Unix OS.
it always happen for me on window 7 but not on XP professional in the past
when I switch back to XP , that is fixed for the issue for me
What I said not encourage you to switch back your OS, just let you know the
latest OS system need latest driver to fill or work together better

Have you tried using an Ethernet cable for a while to eliminate wifi issues? When I had your exact same problem it ended up being wifi interference and switching to a less busy wifi channel fixed it.
Expert: Gerwin Jansen replied at 2024-07-27 12:58:15
Is your wireless network protected and what other machines did you connect to it (wired/wireless)?
