I'm a member of the domain admins group in a windows 2008R2 domain. I have WSUS 3.0 installed on an older windows 2008R2 server. How can I move/relocate it to a new WSUS 3.0 server without having to go out to MS to download all of those updates all over again?

The suggested approach did not work. It repeatedly failed. My approach is the equivalent of completing nuilding a new server and have it go out to MS and download all the updates and meta-data.
Accepted Solution

The final stages of this process entails exporting the meta-data from the old WSUS server and importing it on to the WSUS server. Exporting the meta-data was successful, however, importing it on to the new server repeatedly failed. After much research on own I still could resolve the issue. Ultimately, I had to allow the new WSUS server to download this meta-data and all of the updates all over again in order to resolve the issue.

Dstewartjr, here is the full text of the error that I'm getting when I'm attempting import the metadata on to the the new server. I'm also including the file files I found at this location. Its as follows: "ExpandCabinetToDirectory ( C:UsersAdministrators.CSWAppDataLocalTemp2 mp15.tmp): Not a cabinet (13) Import failed to import updates. Please look at log file for error details.
Fatal error: Unable to uncompress package.

No its not compressed. However, the old server is a physical server while the new server is a VM.

Is the drive you are trying to import to compressed ???

When I got to step 4 in the paper you recommended I was able to successfully export metadata from the old server using wsusutil.exe. However, when I attempted to import the metadata on the new WSUS server I'm getting this error "Not a cabinet (13) import failed to import updates. Fatal Error: Unable to uncompress package. How can I resolve this issue?

My bad dstewartjr, I took another look at your orignal recommendation. The link you suggested above should work.I found the settings in windows backup in windows 2008R2. I was able to backup server the old wsus 3.0 server and restored it to the new server.

You could use XCOPY | ROBOCOPY WSUSWSUSContent* instead then

I apologize for taking so long to get back to everyone. However, Dstewartjr the aricle you referenced above actually only works for Windows 2003 server because there is no ntbackup in Windows 2008R2 , and in server backup in Server 2008R2 it does not allow you select which directories to be backed up from C. One has to do a full backup of it. Any ideas on how to move WSUS3 from one 2008R2 server to another 2008R2 server?
