LAN network connection

I have two computer one window 7 and window xp and one modem device of ADSL router
with 4 ports , and two computer are connected to one of 4 ports ADSL modem router.
Each computer I need to do setup LAN and PPPOE connection in ooder to connect to WWW
or exteranl Internet.

I would like to ask one question whether I just need to do on one computer only
with LAN and PPPOE connection setup and the other computer just need to do LAN connection only(no PPPOE modem connection neccssary) so that both computers connected to www internet ? I believe that is possible the reason becoz two computers are connected to LAN ports together on the ADSL modem router already.

IF possible.how to set the gateway address of second computer on Port 2. by editng
newtork properties manually.
For example:

Port 2: Window XP
LAN Adaptor:

If impossible, why not ?
The case like in university, the school is only do one time modem/router/gateway connection to WAN(www internet)
and other user computers in school just need do LAN connection that will directly
connect to outside world internet, Right

In recent thread about networking, I am not just asking how to do the internet or router connectivity but also want to get the actual neworking concept

it didn't work for 192.168.8.1
THis thread just let me know more about more networking
So just conclude

1- THe NEC mode might be router since it has 4 port ?
2- THe NEC mode must be set to bridge mode
3- I could not find out the IP of login page router since item i above is not confirmed yet

I bought one CISCO LINK SYS wireless router and I tried every thing is okay with 192.168.1.1
and I also connect the CISCO wireless router to the port of THE NEC modem that is
also working. ANd today I found interesting thing I can success do
port forwarding on LINKSYS amdin pagefrom ISP IP port 80 forward to one of LAN computers , other port
of ISP IP port is blocked by ISP

Just wait the ISP support reply if need more information about NEC mode
that is a good study at least now I know there is so called brdige mode

Dear Duncan,

As far as I know all ADSL modems have a router function.
Since it has 4 network ports it should be able to direct traffic from each port to the internet.
I think your modem is a router too, it is only not visible since it is in bridge mode, so it is configured not to see the admin page.

Did you set an internal ip address to the computer you use to configure your modem?
Probably the internal DHCP is turned of so you need to specify an address and subnetmask manually, please try entering the following:

IP address: 192.168.8.100
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: leave blank for now

when this is set, open a command shell (start > Run > cmd > enter)
type: Ping 192.168.8.1

if this responds, go to your webbrowser and type http://192.168.8.1/

If all fails I would recommend buying a new adsl modem, you should be able to get one for $20.

I try http://setup.net and 192.168.8.1 that ISP told me to do so
and that is also mentioned in your pdf document
and
both is not correct. And ISP support go to check it again and reply
the device I am using that is just ADLS modem and no router function so
the modem is no any admin login page.

Last question, ask BM-vnext, could we have ADSL model without router function with
4 ports Ethernet connection. I mean on the modem we can use one phone line to
share 4 ports computers connectionat the same time. Is it possible without router function ?

Now I am using the modem with two computer, on every computer I do PPPOE
connection individually, both computer could go internet(www.goggle.com) at the same
using only one modem and one phone line

Dear BM-vnext,

that is suprise you found the related manual,
my ISP admin support has NOT replied me yet.
I took a few days to seach it, but could not find related one, at least related

Please let me digest the document first, and see how to switch back to router mode
instead of bridge mode.

There is console 9-pin RS232 port which might my used for changing router setting
by external VT100 terminal

Hi Duncan,

after some research I found out your router is probably a Netvigator router, which is actually a branded NEC NTA-3110.

A pretty extensive manual (pdf) for it is found here:

it seems my ADSL modem router is set to bridge mode by NEC manaufacture so that
I have to do PPPOE connection on every computer.
And even I tried IP of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 10......many try , I still can not
go to router's admin login page and set it back to router mode

Without modem manual, I can not find the admin login web page in order to
switch back it into router mode, so I think this thread answer is impossible if no the
admin login web page's IP

If you get the NEC NTA 3110 manual, please send to me

You should be able to configure your router as PPPOE client. So you set your username and password in the router, and the router will get the IP address of your provider. Then none of your computers need to authenticate with your provider since the router already did so.

All your devices will get an internal IP address and share the external ip address
Your internal network need to be configured, to use your routers internal IP address as default gateway and the router will handle (route) all internet traffic to your provider.

Hi,

In most routers it's possible to preconfigure all the ADSL settings, so that you don't need to set them up anymore on the PC's... Have a look in the web-configuration pages of the router. Most likely you will find the settings there under interfaces or WAN.

Hi Duncan,

I think we saw your question before.
The more I think about your configuration, I think you should change the settings in your router.

I think currently it is set in Bridged Mode, so it is passing your provider credentials directly to your computer.

Depending on the type of router you have, it should be possible to set it in Router Mode.
Then it will enable the DHCP server in the router, and you'll be able to connect multiple deviced via the 4 ports and will receive a internal IP address.
